Spirit shines as disabled runners star at Mumbai Marathon

Athletes with disabilities delivered some of the most inspiring moments at the Tata Mumbai Marathon, proving grit and determination can overcome physical limits. The annual race was held on Sunday in Mumbai, drawing thousands of participants across multiple categories, including para-athletes and runners with special needs.

Competing in the ‘Can and Able’ category, participants pushed through demanding distances with the help of guides, wheelchairs and prosthetics, earning loud cheers along the course. “This race gives us confidence and visibility,” said one runner after crossing the finish line. Another participant added, “It’s not about speed, it’s about showing what’s possible.”

Race organisers said inclusion remains a key focus of the marathon, noting a steady rise in participation from athletes with disabilities in recent years. A medical volunteer described the effort as “a celebration of resilience rather than limitation.”

As elite runners chased records, the Can and Able category reminded spectators that the marathon’s strongest stories are often written far from the podium.
