Pragg, Vaishali, Divya near Candidates 2026 spots

R Praggnanandhaa, Vaishali Rameshbabu and Divya Deshmukh are set to qualify for the 2026 Candidates Tournament after uncertainty around Koneru Humpy’s participation, with recent geopolitical tensions influencing the lineup.

The Indian trio strengthened their positions through consistent performances across qualifying events, while doubts over Humpy’s availability — linked to travel concerns amid the Iran conflict — opened additional pathways. As a result, India could see multiple representatives in both open and women’s sections.

“It’s a huge opportunity, but the focus remains on playing good chess,” Pragg said in a recent interaction. Vaishali added: “Moments like these come from years of work. I just want to stay calm and prepared.”

A senior official noted: “The situation is unusual, but the qualification is earned through performance. These players deserve it.”

If confirmed, it will mark one of India’s strongest-ever presences at the Candidates, underlining the country’s growing depth in elite chess.
