Sri Lanka fast bowler Matheesha Pathirana has been ruled out of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup due to injury, team officials confirmed on Wednesday, casting doubt over his availability for IPL 2026.
The 23-year-old pace spearhead sustained the setback during the group stage, with medical scans revealing an issue serious enough to end his tournament. Pathirana had been central to Sri Lanka’s bowling plans, known for his slingy action and death-over accuracy.
“It’s a massive blow for us,” a Sri Lanka team spokesperson said. “He was key to our strategy in the final overs.”
A former Sri Lanka captain added on television, “Replacing his skill set won’t be easy.”
Pathirana’s absence weakens Sri Lanka’s attack heading into the knockout phase, while his rehabilitation timeline could also impact his participation in next year’s IPL season.
