Mets reverse course on issuing team legend’s famed number to prospect after fan outrage: ‘Just seems wrong’

Mets Reassign Jersey Number to Prospect After Initial Backlash

The New York Mets promoted outfield prospect Nick Morabito ahead of their game against the Washington Nationals and issued him number 8, a jersey unused by the club since 2001.

The number had remained largely inactive in recognition of catcher Gary Carter, who spent five seasons with the Mets from 1985 to 1989 and contributed to the 1986 World Series title. The assignment prompted immediate criticism from supporters and longtime broadcaster Howie Rose, who noted the timing during the 40th anniversary of that championship season.

The Mets subsequently decided to give Morabito number 55, though the change occurred too late for the game in which he made his debut and wore number 8. Under owner Steve Cohen the club has retired six additional numbers since 2020, with Carlos Beltran scheduled to join that group later this year.
