MCC updates cricket laws with 73 changes

The Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) has approved 73 changes to the Laws of Cricket, announced this week in London, aiming to improve clarity, fairness and game flow ahead of the next playing cycle. Key updates include making a final over mandatory in shortened matches and removing the controversial “bunny hop” boundary catch.

The MCC said the revisions address modern playing conditions and frequent points of confusion.

One major amendment ensures matches reduced by weather must include a final over where possible, while fielders will no longer be allowed to jump from outside the boundary to complete airborne catches. Former umpire Simon Taufel welcomed the move, calling it “a step that removes grey areas officials struggled with.”

The laws will come into effect later this year and are expected to influence playing regulations across international and domestic cricket worldwide.
