Mahela Jayawardene Reveals Bumrah Was Managing a Niggle — But Insists He’s Fine

Five matches. Zero wickets. For Jasprit Bumrah, that’s uncharted territory.
Mumbai Indians head coach Mahela Jayawardene has opened up on what’s behind the slump. It started with a minor physical issue. “Initially he had a slight niggle, so we wanted to build him up,” Jayawardene said. “Over the last few games his speeds have gone up.”
But he refused to call it a bad patch. “Bumrah is bowling well — it’s just that we’re not putting pressure in the powerplay,” he said. “Sometimes you need a bit of luck as well.”
The bigger issue, Jayawardene admitted, is collective. “As a unit, we have lacked penetration on different surfaces.” Bumrah isn’t the problem. MI’s system is.
