LeBron James Signals Cleveland Interest With Social Media Activity
LeBron James reportedly liked an Instagram post calling for his return to the Cleveland Cavaliers, adding a concrete social media dimension to speculation about his future following the Los Angeles Lakers’ elimination from the 2026 playoffs. The Lakers were swept in four games by the Oklahoma City Thunder in the Western Conference semifinals, ending James’ eighth season with the franchise.
James, 41, stated after the elimination that he would take time with his family before deciding on his basketball future. “I don’t know what the future holds for me, obviously, as it stands right now tonight,” he said on May 11. “I’ll go back and recalibrate with my family and talk with them and spend some time with them, and then obviously when the time comes, you guys will know what I decide to do.” He averaged 20.9 points, 6.1 rebounds and 7.2 assists during the 2025-26 regular season.
A return to Cleveland would be James’ third stint with the Cavaliers. He originally left the team in 2010 to join the Miami Heat, then returned in 2014 and led Cleveland to its first NBA championship in 2016. Financially, any reunion would face significant obstacles: the Cavaliers already carry Donovan Mitchell and Evan Mobley at more than $50 million each annually next season, with Jarrett Allen projected around $28 million against the cap. James Harden also holds a $42.3 million player option for next season, according to the draft material.
Cleveland is currently engaged in the Eastern Conference Finals against the New York Knicks, having dropped Game 1 to the Knicks. James’ next step – whether a return to the Lakers, a move to Cleveland or another destination, or retirement – remains publicly undecided.
