India women earn historic Laureus nomination

India’s women’s cricket team, led by Harmanpreet Kaur, have become the first-ever women’s cricket side to be nominated for a Laureus World Sports Award, marking a landmark moment for the sport globally.
The nomination, announced this week by the Laureus Academy, recognises the team’s outstanding performances over the past year on the international stage. India’s run to major tournament finals and consistent victories against top-ranked opponents elevated their global profile. “This is a proud moment for women’s cricket and for India,” Harmanpreet said. “It reflects the hard work of every player in the squad.”
A BCCI official added, “The team has inspired millions with their fearless approach.”
The Laureus Awards, regarded as one of sport’s highest honours, rarely feature cricket teams, making the recognition a significant breakthrough for the women’s game.
