India shifts focus to Olympic gold, 2028 T20 title
India’s T20 captain Suryakumar Yadav has urged the team to start building for 2028 after their historic T20 World Cup triumph, setting sights on Olympic gold in Los Angeles and another global title later that year.
Speaking after India’s dominant victory in Ahmedabad, where the hosts crushed New Zealand by 96 runs in the final, Yadav said the celebration must quickly give way to long-term planning. The win made India the first team to defend the T20 World Cup and the first to lift the trophy three times.
“It has been very special,” Yadav said. “But the next goal is Olympic gold and the 2028 T20 World Cup.”
Former players also backed the shift in focus. “This team has set the standard,” one analyst told Times of India. “Now the challenge is to rebuild and stay ahead for 2028.”
“The future starts now,” Yadav added, stressing that India must develop fresh talent to keep its dominance in the shortest format.
