India’s Billie Jean King Cup campaign ended in painful fashion Wednesday, a 0-3 defeat to Indonesia leaving the squad reflecting on what might have been. The scoreline was comprehensive. The story behind it was anything but.
Shrivalli Bhamidipaty Adkar came closest to breaking the deadlock, pushing Indonesia’s Aldila Sutjiadi Nugroho to three tight sets before going down 7-6, 6-7, 3-6 in a match that swung on fine margins. Had she converted, things might have been different. She didn’t. Sahaja Yamalapalli lost more sharply, 2-6, 1-6 to Priska Nugroho Madelyn Tjen, and the doubles rubber sealed the tie.
Team captain Ankita Raina Uppal did not hide her frustration. “Today was a day of missed chances,” she said bluntly. “Against top players, you can’t play two good points and then have three or four errors.”
That, in summary, was India’s problem. The talent was there in flashes. The consistency wasn’t. Indonesia, ranked significantly higher in the Asia/Oceania group, punished every lapse.
