India hockey coach protested senior players’ axing, offered exit

India men’s hockey head coach Craig Fulton objected to the exclusion of senior players from the national squad over alleged indiscipline, and even offered to resign, officials confirmed this week. The issue surfaced during recent selection meetings ahead of upcoming international assignments.
Fulton reportedly questioned the decision to drop experienced players, stressing the importance of handling discipline internally. “We must balance standards with team stability,” the coach was quoted as saying, while making it clear he stood by his players.
Hockey India, however, maintained that discipline remains non-negotiable. A federation official said, “No player is bigger than the team,” adding that rules apply equally to all.
A former India captain described the episode as “a difficult but necessary conversation” within elite sport.
The standoff highlights growing tension between performance goals and discipline as India continue preparations for a demanding season.
