Gukesh, Humpy shine at Chess Rapid Worlds

India’s top chess stars made a strong start at the World Rapid Championships on December 26, with D Gukesh and Koneru Humpy delivering eye-catching performances as the elite event got underway. The tournament, featuring the world’s best rapid players, is being held on the global FIDE stage and marks a key test at the end of the season.
Teenage Grandmaster Gukesh began confidently in the open section, picking up crucial early points to stay among the leading pack. “The focus is to take one game at a time,” Gukesh said after the opening rounds. “Rapid chess leaves no room for mistakes.”
In the women’s field, former world champion Humpy showed her experience, remaining unbeaten in the early rounds with a series of controlled displays. “Consistency is very important in rapid formats,” she noted. “You must stay calm even under time pressure.”
A chess analyst praised the Indian contingent, saying: “Gukesh’s aggression and Humpy’s composure make them serious contenders.”
With several rounds still to play, India’s hopes remain high as the Rapid Championships build toward a tense finish.
