Chopra calls for economy rate award in IPL 2026

Former India cricketer Aakash Chopra has asked the BCCI to introduce an award for the best economy rate in the IPL from the 2026 season, starting March 28, saying bowlers deserve more recognition in a batter-heavy format.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Chopra said tight bowling often decides matches. “The game has become batter-friendly, but the most economical bowler can still win you games,” he said. Referring to Jasprit Bumrah, he added, “That six-run over against England completely changed the match and helped win the semi-final.”

Last season saw 18 totals above 220, including SRH’s 286, showing how tough it has become for bowlers. Even top wicket-takers had an average economy of 8.41.

“If this award was there, Bumrah would have easily won it,” Chopra said, backing the need to support bowlers.
