BWF downgrade leaves Indian shuttlers under pressure

Indian badminton players face a tougher international road after the Badminton World Federation downgraded a key tournament in India this week, reducing ranking points and prize money on offer. The decision impacts the country’s status on the BWF calendar and could affect qualification pathways ahead of major events.
With fewer high-value points available at home, Indian shuttlers may now need stronger results overseas to maintain or improve their rankings. A senior player admitted the change “makes the season more challenging,” adding that competing abroad more often will be crucial.
Officials acknowledged the setback but remained hopeful. “We will work closely with BWF to restore the event’s stature,” a federation source said.
India has emerged as a global badminton force in recent years, producing Olympic medallists and multiple Super Series champions. The downgrade, however, means the immediate task just got steeper for the country’s top rackets.
